Aisha Changezi

A photo of Aisha Changezi

Aisha Changezi is an interdisciplinary award-winning artist and a recipient of the Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar Award and a BFA from the University of Michigan, U.S.A. The resonance of her oeuvre is reflected through her love for the process of creating art which has allowed her to master a wide range of mediums and materials. With experience in painting, illustration, design, and ceramics, she is further enriching her art by attending workshops for geometric patterns and English calligraphy. She is an active member of IAMPETH (The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting). She is also a student of Arabic calligraphy and at the moment is working towards her ijaza (license) in Arabic calligraphy under apprenticeship with a master calligrapher, Dr. Nihad Dukhan. Her diverse background, interest, and experiences are reflected in her detailed, representational, and eclectic art style.

Artist Statement

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”

Born in Pakistan and raised in the United States, I always felt a sense of belonging to two different cultures. That initial struggle of not belonging to one group later became a blessing for relating with different groups of people, which allows me to be the bridge between the two societies.

This dichotomy taught me to celebrate human diversity, its arts, traditions, and spirituality, and use it as a tool to unite at a time where the rhetoric of division and “them against us” has taken over our media. I embrace my cultural duality and positively use it in my representational and carefully orchestrated work, that shares the beauty of both traditions — to help bridge the gaps.

Often inspired by nature, my work resonates a calm, therapeutic feel, hoping to give some relief to its audience. My interest in traditional arts has led me to acquire illumination skills and an apprenticeship with master calligrapher, Dr. Nihad Dukhan. The resonance of my oeuvre is reflected in my eclectic style due to my curiosity about the process which has allowed me to master a wide range of mediums and materials.
